Phil Magney is an automotive electronics expert with over 25 years’ experience in active safety systems, automated vehicle systems and telematics. Phil is the Founder and Principal Advisor of VSI Labs, a leading researcher and engineering advisor on autonomous vehicle technologies.
Phil is the author of numerous reports and papers for industry trade publications as well as a frequent speaker at global automotive and technology conferences. Phil is trained in ISO 26262 and has a deep understanding of functional safety within the context of automotive safety and automated driving. Phil is an active member of SAE International and contributor to ITS International. Phil graduated in 1981 from the University of Minnesota where he studied math, economics and IT.
Before founding VSI, Phil was co-founder and president of Telematics Research Group (2001), which was acquired by iSuppli in 2008 where he was VP of Automotive. When iSuppli was acquired by IHS a few years later, Phil became Head of IHS Automotive Technology Group. In his tenure here, Phil acquired a deep understanding of automotive electronics systems including vehicle connectivity and telematics as it applies to automotive infotainment and safety systems.
