Image sensors, coupled with artificial intelligence, are increasingly being used as the “eyes” of machines. This is creating tremendous new opportunities for image sensors — while also radically transforming what system and application developers need from image sensors. In this panel discussion, a diverse set of experts will share their perspectives on the future of image sensors. The panel will explore trends such as integrating processors on the same die with sensors; ultra-low-power sensors; and new image sensing approaches, including event-based and neuromorphic sensing, new techniques for optical depth sensing, and hyperspectral imaging.

Session Speakers

  • Shung Chieh is currently co-founder and VP of Engineering at Solidspac3, a construction tech startup. Solidspac3 brings the construction site in 2D and 3D to the desktop for field personnel so they can better visualize issues, review quality analysis and coordinate via our software platform. Shung’s technical interest has spanned image sensors, image processing and applications across consumer, medical and industrial markets. He enjoyed pursuing novel imaging technology and applications as VP of Engineering at two startups prior to Solidspac3: Tetravue, (flash lidar) and Inscopix (neuroscience microscopy imaging). Before that, he was also the VP/General Manager of the Consumer Imaging Business at ON Semiconductor, and VP of Technology Development at Aptina Imaging. He has a Comp Eng BS from University of Waterloo, an EE PhD from Cornell University and an MBA from Wharton.

  • Dr. Sandor Barna is the VP of Hardware at Aurora, the company delivering the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly. He knows how to build innovative, high-performance products and bring them to market at scale. This experience in manufacturing and shipping technology at scale is valuable as Aurora lays the foundation for delivering its hardware across multiple vehicle platforms that will operate on surface streets and highways. Prior to joining Aurora, Sandor served as GoPro’s Senior Vice President of Engineering and Chief Technology Officer and has also led large technical teams at ON Semiconductor, Aptina, and Micron. Sandor holds a Ph.D. and an MA in Physics from Princeton University, and a BS in Physics from Yale University.

  • Dr. Boyd Fowler joined OmniVision in December 2015 as the Vice President of Marketing and was appointed Chief Technology Officer in July 2017. Prior to joining OmniVision, he was co-founder and VP of Engineering at Pixel Devices, where he focused on developing high-performance CMOS image sensors. After Pixel Devices was acquired by Agilent Technologies, Dr. Fowler was responsible for advanced development of commercial CMOS image sensor products. In 2005, Dr. Fowler joined Fairchild Imaging as the CTO and VP of Technology, where he developed SCMOS image sensors for high-performance scientific applications. After Fairchild Imaging was acquired by BAE Systems, Dr. Fowler was appointed the technology director of the CCD/CMOS image sensor business. He has authored numerous technical papers, book chapters, and patents. Dr. Fowler received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1990 and 1995 respectively.

  • Dr. Sundar Ramamurthy is responsible for Applied’s business in wafer-level packaging, specialty semiconductors and epitaxy markets. In his role, Sundar leads an integrated team across the company to fuel growth in some of the fastest growing markets in the semiconductor industry. Over the past two decades, Sundar and his team have delivered profitable growth for the corporation in multiple areas of semiconductor equipment technologies – rapid thermal processing, plasma doping, physical vapor deposition, atomic layer and chemical vapor deposition of thin metal films. He led teams that commercialized 20+ new products to solve critical transistor and interconnect scaling challenges by introducing new materials and interface engineering solutions into volume manufacturing. Sundar holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Minnesota. He has more than 30 patents granted or pending. Sundar is also an active mentor with the Miller Center in Santa Clara University for accelerating social enterprises.

  • Ryad B. Benosman is a full Professor at both the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Carnegie Mellon University and Sorbonne Universitas where he does research at the intersection of robotics, computer vision and neuroscience. Specifically, he investigates the use of standard and neuromorphic cameras to enable autonomous, agile robotics, brain-machine interfaces focusing on retina prosthetics, optogenetics stimulation and recently visual cortex stimulation. Ryad did his PhD in robotics and computer vision at University of Pierre and Marie Curie after studying pure and applied mathematics. He is a pioneer and a leading researcher in the field of event based neuromorphic computer vision. His lab developed the ATIS neuromorphic camera. He has authored more than 200 papers, 60 of which are considered to provide the foundations of neuromorphic computer vision. He also founded several companies such as Prophesse (formerly Chronocam) the leading company in event-based vision, Pixium Vision (retina prosthetics), Chronolife (eHealth) and more recently Brainiac (neural processor computer).
