But to realize this potential, we must find ways to simplify and democratize the development and deployment of edge AI systems.   • Pete Warden is a leading thinker, innovator and entrepreneur in visual AI, software and big data. In 2003, Pete created a set of 45 image processing filters that were able to detect features in video content at 30 fps on 2003-era laptops. Apple bought his technology and hired him to work on integrating it into Apple’s imaging-related products. In 2011, Pete co-founded Jetpac, serving as CTO and building the company’s technical team. This venture capital-backed startup created a unique product that analyzed the pixel data of over 140 million photos from Instagram and turned them into in-depth guides for more than 5,000 cities around the world. Pete joined Google in 2014 when Google acquired Jetpac. Pete is currently a Staff Research Engineer at Google, focused on enabling the deployment of machine learning in cost- and power-constrained systems. At Google, Pete leads the development of the TensorFlow Lite machine learning framework for mobile and embedded applications, including a recently released experimental version of TensorFlow Lite for microcontrollers, which can be used on low-cost chips with less than 100 Kbytes of memory. Pete is a sought-after speaker and writes a popular blog at www.petewarden.com. He is the author of two O'Reilly books, “Public Data Sources” and the “Big Data Glossary”. He earned his B.S. in computer science from the University of Manchester.

  • Steven Bathiche leads Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group, an interdisciplinary team of scientists and product engineers. His expertise lies in multi-disciplinary approaches, a broad range of sciences and engineering, display technology, sensing technology, algorithms, and software. He’s been shipping and inventing new Microsoft devices, interfaces, and experiences since 1999, from the original Surface table to Microsoft’s present line of tablets, laptops, and new form factors. Throughout his career, Stevie’s guiding purpose has been to evolve the computer by inventing new interaction technologies. This includes better ways for devices to capture people’s intent and their physical world; enabling the computer to perceive and understand these inputs at higher levels of abstraction; and new output technologies to convey knowledge, meaning, and experiences back to the user. Together, these advances remove barriers, reduce friction, and enable people to do more. He received a B.S. in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech and an M.S. in bioengineering from the University of Washington.

  • Samir Kumar is managing director at M12, providing technical leadership for the recently announced AI Fund. He will also lead investment activities in other key frontier technology areas such as quantum computing and autonomous vehicles. Prior to this, he was senior director for business development and product management in Qualcomm’s corporate R&D division. In this role, he led early stage product validation, partnerships, acquisitions & strategy for embedded/on-device deep learning. Samir started his career at Microsoft and spent several years in Redmond leading product management/product planning efforts for enterprise mobility before heading to Palm, Samsung, and Qualcomm. He holds a bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University.

  • Steve Teig is the CEO of Perceive, where he is leading a team building solutions and transformative machine learning technology for consumer edge devices. He is an award-winning technologist, entrepreneur, and inventor on 315 US patents who has been CTO of three EDA software companies, two biotech companies, and a semiconductor company. Of these, two went public during his tenure, two were acquired, and one is a Fortune 500 company. Steve previously served as CTO at Tabula, Inc., Cadence Design Systems, Inc., Simplex Solutions, Inc., CombiChem, and BioCAD Corp. In 2011, Steve received both a World Technology Award and an Edison Award. He holds a BSE in EECS from Princeton University.

  • Luis Ceze is a Professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, Co-founder and CEO at OctoML and Venture Partner at Madrona Venture Group. His research focuses on the intersection between computer architecture, programming languages, machine learning and biology. His current focus is on approximate computing for efficient machine learning and DNA-based data storage. He co-directs the Molecular Information Systems Lab (MISL), the Systems and Architectures for Machine Learning lab (SAML) and the Sampa Lab for HW/SW co-design. He has co-authored over 100 papers in these areas, and had several papers selected as IEEE Micro Top Picks and CACM Research Highlights. His research has been featured prominently in the media including New York Times, Popular Science and MIT Technology Review. He is a recipient of an NSF CAREER Award, a Sloan Research Fellowship, a Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship, the IEEE TCCA Young Computer Architect Award and UIUC Distinguished Alumni Award.
