Whether in indoor environments, such as supermarkets, museums and offices, or outdoor environments, such as parks, maintaining safe social distancing has been a priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this talk, we present our work developing cloud-connected edge AI solutions that count the number of people present in outdoor and indoor spaces, providing facility operators with real-time information that allows them to manage spaces to enable social distancing. We will provide an overview of the system architecture, hardware, algorithms, software and backend monitoring elements of our solution, highlighting differences in how we address indoor vs. outdoor spaces. We will also present results from deployments of our solution.
