Fireside Chat – Embedded Vision in Robotics, Biotech and Education: A Conversation With Dean Kamen

Join us for a conversation with legendary inventor and technology visionary Dean Kamen. In his 2018 keynote presentation at the Embedded Vision Summit, Kamen memorably predicted that embedded vision capabilities would eventually become as common as limit switches–i.e., used universally to enable systems to understand their environments. In today’s on-stage conversation, Jeff Bier, Founder of the Edge AI and Vision Alliance, will catch up with Dean on how visual AI is currently being used in his projects. These include mobile robots (developed by his company, DEKA Research and Development), new processes for the large-scale manufacturing of engineered tissues and tissue-related technologies (led by Kamen’s Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute) and the educational programs organized by the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) program. Dean and Jeff will explore where visual AI is paying off as Dean envisioned, and what challenges are limiting his projects from realizing their full potential.

  • Dean Kamen is an innovator, but not just of things. He hopes to revolutionize attitudes, quality of life and awareness. While an undergraduate, Kamen developed the first portable infusion device, which delivers drug treatments that once required hospital care. And, through DEKA Research and Development, he developed a portable dialysis machine, a vascular stent and the iBOT, a motorized wheelchair that climbs stairs. Kamen is a huge believer in education, and in 1989 established the nonprofit FIRST to inspire teenagers to pursue careers in science and technology. FIRST sponsors lively annual competitions, where students form teams to create the best robot. Two of Kamen’s current projects require extensive use of computer vision. In the first project, Kamen’s team at DEKA is creating their next-generation agile wheelchair. In the second project, Kamen’s Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute aims to enable the large-scale manufacturing of engineered tissues and tissue-related technologies, with the eventual goal of mass-producing replacement humans organs.
