IV infusion is the method of delivering intravenous fluids or medications where fluid flows from an IV bag to the patient. IV infusions are one of the most common clinical procedures performed in hospitals, yet the underlying technology governing how fluid is delivered and monitored has remained largely unchanged for decades. In this talk, we will discuss how the established approach creates clinical and operational challenges and how those challenges shaped the development of SAFEflow, a vision-based infusion system that monitors and controls flow through closed-loop feedback. We will then examine the path from product concept to clinical use: defining the clinical need, designing for real-world care environments, navigating validation and regulatory requirements and demonstrating value to healthcare stakeholders. We will also discuss the potential impact on patient safety and staff efficiency.
